BOXER 22 SAR TAKES PLACE

Several Detachment 2 pilots are involved in this mission.  Dean DeTar, JW Weinig, Jax Roberts, and Mac Coleman escort DaNang Jollys to the SAR.  The opinions of JW and Dean are very interesting regarding the tactics and way the SAR was run.  Dean used what he learned from Boxer 22 on Wolf 06 in Mar70.  Of special note was the use of Smoke Bombs as opposed to the OLAA (via the 6th SOS) skills and techniques of using CBU 22 for smoke.  NKP had huge supplies of their preferred Smoke Bomb stores that carried late into 1970.  This is a very interesting subject matter for further research!!!!!

1969 – December 05; A HH-53C from the 40th ARRS, crewed by Pfanschmidt (P), Edward L. Hlavaty (CP), Claude C. Franks (FE) and Douglas L. Horka (PJ), attempted two times to rescue the WSO of an F-4C (Call sign “Boxer 22”), 1st Lt. Woodrow J. Bergeron after he and his pilot, Capt. Benjamin Franklin Danielson, ejected from their 37mm AAA damaged aircraft near the village of Ban Phanop in southern Laos. They made two attempts but were unsuccessful and they were driven off their attempt by heavy enemy ground fire (see next entry). “Vietnam Air Losses” by Chris Hobson & JRCC Save Form & http://www.pjsinnam.com/vn_history/pdf_files/Chronology/1969.pdf & “PJ’s in Vietnam” by Robert L.
