THE COMBINED OLAA UNIT BEGINS OPERATIONS ON THIS DAY.  THE NEW COMBINED OPERATION WAS NAMED DETACHMENT 2 UNTIL 1JAN70, WHEN OLAA BECAME THE ACTUAL RECORD KEEPING NAME OF RECORD FOR THE 56TH SOW.  IN MY MIND, OLAA BEGAN ON 12NOV69…NO MATTER WHAT DETACHMENTS NAMES WERE ASSIGNED FOR CONVENIENCE.

RE-WRITE THIS.  WE ACTUALLY WERE NOW OLAA UNDER PCS W/O PCA STATUS.

This would be the first day that all the initial OLAA pilots would be permanently assigned to the full Detachment 1 at Da Nang.  We now commenced combined operation with 12 pilots based at Da Nang Air Base.  On this date, Dean DeTar’s Chronological Listing of Service records show the following: “69Dec12 WG. DEPUTY COMMANDER, OLAA, 56 SOWG, NAKON PHANOM RTABB THAI (PACAF) w duty at Da Nang AB RVN” This confirms that Dean was now the OLAA Deputy Commander and now assigned to the 56 SOW WING. I have records showing that on this date Jim Wold and Jim Seith flew from PKU to DNG.     I have records showing that on this date Glenn Manning and Don Engebretsen from PKU to DNG.     I believe JW returned to DNG after spending time at PKU on 11Dec69 to recover personal items (and attend the famous Spad “going away party”.     Paul Houppert shows as a Captain for the first time in my records. Mac Coleman remembers that he and I and one other pilot (ask Doc about this) actually were 3 to a room for a while after first arriving…how long? ALL DA NANG AIR BASE FLIGHTS (Except as noted from this date forward) Try to figure out what Fat Face JW flew…#857-E  ???  How did Paul Houppert get to Da Nang???  Likely a solo flight.
