February 9, 1970:

Rampant Raider A-4F Skyhawk BuNo. 155005, was lost in a landing accident at Da Nang. Lt. John Arthur Griner was killed when he diverted to Da Nang after a strike mission and crashed after a tire blew on landing.

1700 Held Memorial Service for Lt. John A. Griner, VA-212.

USS Hancock deck log, 12 February 1970.

I recall that CAG mandated we divert to Da Nang if we had hung bombs rather than jettisoning the TER. Westpac had a shortage of the triple ejector racks. John complied. At touchdown the aircraft started to leave the runway and John ejected into an arresting gear stanchion as the aircraft rolled.

The aftermath…

VA-212 Rampant Raiders A-4F BuNo 155005, NP-307, diverted to Da Nang with a hung bomb and blown main tire, veered off the runway on touchdown and rolled, 09 February 1970.
