On This Date in OLAA History

March 14, 1970:  SAR ON 15MAR70
Lieutenant Junior Grade P. (Pete) A. Schranz flying A-4F Skyhawk BuNo. 155010 side number NP 501 was shot down by AAA anti-aircraft over Laos. Lieutenant Schranz ejected and was rescued.
I happened to be on the ship when it happened. In fact, it was my first tour and had only been with 55 for a few days. The pilot was Lt Pete Schranz, and he was hit by AAA over the target in Laos. Shot down at night and was rescued the following morning with no injuries.

1970 – March 14; SAR ON 15MAR70; A HH-3E from the 37th ARRS, crewed by Capt. Gerald L. Keyser Jr. (P), James Z. Elkinton (CP), Karl H. Chunn (FE), Harold W. Harvey (PJ) and Eugene L. Nardi (PJ), rescued the pilot of a USN A-4F (Call sign “Garfish 502 501”), Lt. (jg) Peter A. 1970 – March 14; UH-1P #64-15491 (Call sign “Green Hornet ?”) of the 20th SOS from Ban Me Thuot, RVN crewed  by Capt. Dana Allen Dilley (P), Capt. Marvin R. Loper (CP), SSgt. John Andrew Thorburn (AG) and A1C David A. Carpenter (AG) was shot down while supporting a LRRP mission near Duc Lap, RVN. Capt. Dana A. Dilley (P) was killed in the crash. A USA helicopter on the same mission rescued the surviving crew members.
