WOLF 06 DAY 1 OF SAR EFFORTS (DAY 2 ON THE GROUND)

 

1970 – March 20; A HH-53 (Call sign “Jolly Green 68”) from the 40th ARRS, crewed by John C. Cody (P), Joe C. Fouts (CP), Martin E. Bell (FE), Jack D. Moran (PJ) and James B. Gerwert (PJ), rescued the pilot of a A-1E (Call sign “Strike 63”), 1st Lt. Dale P. Townsend, after he ejected from his 37 mm AAA fire damaged aircraft, on 19 March 1979???, about 10 miles from Ban Senphan, Laos. “Vietnam Air Losses” by Chris Hobson &

1970 – March 20; A HH-53C from 40th ARRS, crewed by Donald H. Almanzar (P), John O. Lindgren Jr. (CP), Thomas D. Blakeney (FE), Lehman L. Booher (PJ) and James A. Hunt (PJ), unsuccessfully attempted the rescue the co-pilot of a F-4D (Call sign “Wolf 06 Bravo”), 1st Lt. Dennis Gerald Pugh (P) after he and his pilot, Capt. William A. Rash, had ejected from their 37 mm AAA fire damaged aircraft near Ban Senphan at the southern end of the Mu Gia Pass, Laos on 19 March 1970. Lt. 1970 – March 20; UH-1P gunships of the 20th SOS “Green Hornets” rescued a MACV SOG recon team from deep in enemy held territory that was being chased by enemy forces. One of the “Green Hornet” crew members known to have been involved in this action is SSgt. Al Rivero, who was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions on this mission.
