1970 – April 21; A HH-53C from the 40th ARRS, crewed by Edward J. Sichterman Jr. (P), unkn (CP), unkn (FE), Charles L. Colbert (PJ) and unkn (PJ), unsuccessfully attempted the rescue of the pilot of a A-1H (Call sign “Sandy 01”), Capt. John M. Dyer, after he ejected from his 23 mm AAA damaged aircraft about 12 miles west of Kham Duc, but they were shot off the attempts by enemy fire with the PJ wounded (see next two entries). “Vietnam Air Losses” by Chris Hobson & “PJ’s in Vietnam” by Robert L. 1970 – April 21; A HH-3E from the 37th ARRS, crewed by Charles W. Hoilman Jr. (P), David E. Vaughn (CP), Robert J. P. Laframboise (FE), Stephen V. Samo (PJ) and Terry L. Wetzel (PJ), unsuccessfully attempted the rescue of the co-pilot of a USMC OV-10 (Call sign “Cowpoke 18 Bravo”), Capt. D. Charles E. Hatch, after he and his pilot, Maj. Eugene Lacy Wheeler, ejected from their 37 mm AAA damaged aircraft about 12 miles miles west of Kham Duc, but they were driven off by enemy ground fire. Maj. 1970 – April 21; A HH-43F from Det. 7, 38th ARRS at Da Nang AB, RVN, crewed by Capt. Roger E. Hill (P), Loran M. Nichols (CP), Joseph L. Coburn (FE) and Anthony R. Gargano (PJ), rescued Charles L. Colbert (PJ) from HH-53C #785 (Call sign “Jolly Green 77”) and Terry L. Wetzel (PJ) from “Jolly Green 07”. No other details are known at this time. “PJ’s in Vietnam” by Robert L. Morrow (PJ), rescued the pilot of a A-1J (Call sign “Sandy 03”), Maj. Clarence E.
