On This Date in OLAA History

Dean DeTar shot down at Dak Seang that ended up with a Dustoff p/u.  Dean was flying with Mac Coleman and after the recovery Dean was taken to Pleiku after a very unpleasant stop and Army helicopter switch to load a number of very seriously wounded indigenous troops for the Pleiku hospital. 

 

1970 – April 25; A HH-53C from the 40th ARRS, crewed by Capt. Richard M. Baskett (P), James T. Jewett (CP), Travis R. Hendrix (FE), Terry E. Caffery (PJ) and Ronald R. Jeczala (PJ), rescued the WSO of an F-4E (Call sign “Rancho 42”), 1st Lt. Stanley R. Hancock, after he ejected from his AAA damaged aircraft about 7 miles west of Ban Ban, Thailand. The F-4 pilot, Capt. Charles K. Hackett was KIA. “Vietnam Air Losses” by Chris Hobson

 

1970 – April 25; A HH-43F from Det. 7, 38th ARRS at Da Nang AB, RVN, crewed by Maj. John A. Tyson (P), unkn (CP), unkn (FE) and unkn (PJ), medevac’d one USA Troop, SP4 Raymond Kearney in RVN. No other details are known at this time. JRCC Save Form

Remarks: On-Scene Commander for Dean DeTar SAR Form 5 shows 5.2 total w 2 sorties. Mac Coleman awarded a DFC on this date. Mac flew to Pleiku with the Dustoff(‘s?) following Dean’s P/U and landed.
