Nail 44 SAR 

30 June 1970, Jolly Green 54, HH-53C, 66-8283, was on a CSAR mission for the crew of Nail 44 an OV-10A, over Savannakhet, Laos. Abandoning the first rescue attempt due to heavy fire, the pilot Capt Leroy C Schaneberg decided to make a second rescue attempt. JG54 was hit by ground fire and crashed. The 5-man crew were all KIA.  The crash site was excavated in December 1993 and remains were identified as a group on 7 March 1995. Capt Schaneberg was posthumously awarded the Air Force Cross.

1970 – June 30; HH-53C (Call sign “Jolly Green 21”) from the 40th ARRS, crewed by Jimmie Blackwood (P), John A. Raper (CP), Jimmie D. Rash (FE), MSgt. Gary T. Osborne (PJ), Michael H. Enos (AP) unsuccessfully attempted to rescue USA observer, SFC. Albert H. Mostello (US Army SF), of an OV-10A (Call sign “Fatcapper 07 Bravo”), near Ban Kapay, Laos, but was hit by enemy ground fire, damaged and driven off the rescued attempt (see next entry). “PJ’s in Vietnam” by Robert L. 1970 – June 30; HH-53C #68-8283 (Call sign “Jolly Green 54”) from the 40th ARRS, crewed by Capt. Leroy Clyde Schaneberg (P), Maj. John Winfred Goeglein (CP), SSgt. Marvin Earl Bell (FE), MSgt. Paul Laverne Jenkins (PJ), SSgt. Michael Frank Dean (PJ) was hit by ground fire and crashed near Ban Kapay, Laos while on a SAR for an OV-10A (Call sign “Nail 44”, “Fatcapper 07”) crewed by, Capt. William Stephen Snaders (P) & SFC. Albert H. Mostello (US Army SF). The helicopter crew and the OV-10A pilot were KIA and SFC. Albert H. Mostello was rescued by an HH-3E from Da Nang AB, RVN. Capt.
