On This Date in OLAA History

1970 – September 25; UH-1P #64-15484 (Call sign “Green Hornet ?”) of the 20th SOS from Ban Me Thuot, RVN crashed while trying to avoid a mid-air collision with a VNAF CH-34 “Kingbee” helicopter near Mondol Kire, Cambodia. Capt. Jackie Phillip Heil (P) and MSgt. Gerald Allan Cooper (AG) were killed in the crash and fire; the other crew members, Capt. Henry B. Carrington (CP), SSgt. David J. Galvan (AG) were injured and were rescued, using ropes, by another helicopter in the flight crewed by Capt. Charles Svoboda (P), Capt. Lou Glass (CP), unkn (AG) and unkn (AG). Also in support of this action was another “Green Hornet” gunship, UH-1P #63-13162, crewed by unkn (P), unkn (CP), TSgt. James W.
