On This Date in OLAA History

1970 – October 24; CH-3E #66-13287 (Call sign “Knife 31”) of the 21st SOS crewed by Capt. Craig Brian Schiele (P), Maj. Ronald R. Kunz (CP), MSgt. Thomas Edward Heideman (FE) and SSgt. Wallace Spivey (FE) crashed and was lost when lifting off from a hill top LZ, in the Mu Ghai Pass area near the Laos – North Vietnam border, after picking up 11 indigenous personnel. Schiele and Heideman were killed in the crash. The surviving indigenous personnel were picked up by another CH-3E (Call sign “Knife 34”) on the mission (see next entry). http://www.jollygreen.org/jltnc.htm

1970 – October 24; A HH-53B from the 40th ARRS, crewed by Maj. William D. Eastman Jr. (P), John P. Ditucci (CP), Bonnie R. Stevens (FE), Donald G. Behrends (PJ) and Frederick D.
