Talk to Tom Stump about his assignment at this time. It seems likely that he and Rich were summoned as OLAA pilots, but only Rich returned to Da Nang and Tom stayed at NKP to finish out his tour as a Firefly and Hobo as he flew his “famous” last flight sometime in late December after Al Lundy was lost on Christmas Eve. Tom believes that he and Rich were brought in because of their experience levels? This is very interesting because Larry Warren has confirmed that OLAA was put on high SAR alert to cover any other SAR requirements that might occur from the Son Tay Raid. Why OLAA raises very interesting points??? Tom does not return to OLAA likely due to his great relationship with Maj. John Williams.

Tom Stump and Rich Engle are summoned to NKP as OLAA pilots to launch on a flight of four single seat A-1’s led by Major John Robert from NKP.  The SAR birds are launched to cover “expected” requirements in the Hanoi region.  They do perform a SAR barely into Laos for an F-105 “Weasel” with battle damage and a fire…Firebird 05A and 05B.
